Bay Area for Bernie Week in Review

Another week, another news roundup. We’re girding ourselves for the return of Congress – this tragedy is scheduled for September 8. Today is the Democratic National Committee Summer Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I’m recovering from a serious case of summer doldrums. So without further review, here’s some further review:

First, What We’ve Been Up To: Check out This Week in Pictures and our latest podcast on racial justice. Also, send in your submission to the first BA4B Weekly Horse Race.

Subzero Temperatures in Minneapolis: Things got chilly between DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Martin O’Malley, who’s running in the primary and who took his moment on stage at the DNC Summer Meeting to criticize the DNC for its “undemocratic” debate schedule. Ouch.

And Then Bernie Ups the Ante: Any time anyone starts a sentence with “I do not mean to insult anyone here…,” grab the popcorn. Bernie’s full speech is here (skip about 56 minutes in).

Republicans Are People Too (which was a party slogan in the post-Nixon era before it was resurrected, entirely by accident, in 2014 [the more you know]): Bernie can get Republicans on his side, according to Thom Hartmann and Ann Coulter, which is the strangest pair of bedfellows outside the Ginsburg-Scalia bromance.

NPR: Better Red than Dead: Our left-wing state-owned propagandist news source covers Bernie’s brand of democratic socialism. Conflict of interest much?

The New York Times Publishes Evenhanded Article About Bernie: And it’s not an AP reprint!

Thanks … I Guess: 15-year-old parody candidate Deez Nuts endorsed Bernie. Every endorsement counts.

I’m Kinda Digging This Podcast: The Pollsters have a weekly podcast. One of the hosts is from a Republican polling firm, and one is from a Democratic firm. It’s a civil discussion among two total numbers geeks. Except for this week’s episode. They had a special guest, the president of a Ted Cruz super PAC. I suggest skipping it. It gets a little ideological.

Speaking of Polls: Quinnipiac University, which always has the decency to sound out its name for us (KWIN-uh-pe-ack), has a new one in which Bernie polls at 22 percent of Democrats, 5 percentage points higher than in the last one a month ago. There are some other fun details – in head-to-head matchups, Bernie beats Bush and Trump and is basically tied with Rubio; and he’s got the highest net favorable rate among the declared Democratic candidates. He also gets the lowest on the “snowball’s chance in hell I’d vote for that candidate” question.

That’s all for me this week. Make sure to check out our first weekly contest and send in your photos. Happy weekend!
