Bay Area for Bernie Week in Review

Welcome to Issue 1 of the Bay Area for Bernie Week in Review. Each Friday, I’ll be reviewing some of the exciting developments in the Bernie campaign and in, more generally, our national movement for progress. It’s been quite a week, so let’s jump in:

Number of the Week: 9,600. That’s how many supporters packed the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin on Wednesday to hear Bernie speak. No other campaign rally this season has attracted a larger crowd, unless you count the 11,000 students who were required by their university to attend Ted Cruz’s announcement. I don't personally count it, but then again, I've never been a fan of officially sanctioned performance art.

Word of the Week: “Whoa.”

Another Number of the Week: 300. That’s how many people signed up for our mailing list at our table at Gay Pride last Saturday and Sunday. Welcome to the newcomers!

Yet Another Number: 250,000. That’s how many donors contributed to the Sanders campaign since April 30. Bernie announced his quarterly fundraising figures this week: $15 million, with an average donation of $33.

Quote of the Week: Our job is not to think small. It is to think big.”

Poll of the Week: Quinnipiac released a poll yesterday that shows Bernie with support from 33 percent of Democrats in Iowa. That’s more than double the support he had in May.

Winner of the Week: We've got two. We’ll start off with this kid, whom we all fell in love with this week over at the Bay Area for Bernie Facebook group:

A highlight: “And if we’re going to make the right choice for this country, we have got to do everything we can to get Bernie Sanders in the White House. It’s that simple.”

Then we have Bree Newsome, who at 5:30 on the morning of June 27 was arrested after she strapped on spelunking gear, climbed the flag pole outside the South Carolina state capitol in Columbia, and did what the legislators of that state have been too cowardly to do on their own: remove the Confederate flag. As she was taken away by the law, she said, "Every day that flag stays up there is an endorsement of hate."

Local Issue of the Week: On Tuesday, the Berkeley City Council decided not to decide whether to require the homeless to get permits in order to be homeless. Highlight: The word “bamboozling” was used at the Council meeting. The next meeting is August 27, giving councilmembers two months to figure out a more productive way of solving poverty.

Off-Topic Article of the Week: Are we going through a resurgence of reason? Michael Specter of the New Yorker answers with a resounding “maybe.”

What’s Next: A strategy session next Thursday (email for information), and an open meeting at the San Francisco Library (Central Branch) on Saturday, July 11 (RSVP on PeopleforBernie.com).

That’s all for this week. Make sure you stay up to date by subscribing to our newsletter.

  1. Thank you! Thank you! This is a wonderful summary of events regarding Bernie!
Maybe you should send it to the MSM or Slate or Kos or some other site with a lot of viewers? I feel certain they’d be interested in having this. It’s really terrific!

    • A great idea! I’ve set up an account on Daily Kos and will submit tomorrow under its Diaries section.
